Halloween began as the Celtic festival of Samhain, marking the end of the harvest and the coming of winter. Once about warding off spirits, it’s now a widely celebrated American holiday filled with costumes, candy and commercialism.

What is Halloween like in Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi?

We love watching Halloween hype take over Oʻahu from late September to early November. Most businesses embrace the fun, transforming the island into a spooky wonderland.

Spaces fill with décor like spider webs, skeletons and ghastly figures, while menus showcase Halloween-inspired treats, with pumpkin spice creations (think themed lattes) stealing the show.

Families with kids can enjoy fall festivals, pumpkin patches and shopping center promotions like trick-or-treating activities. For those 21 and over, Halloween pop-up bars beckon.

Both adults and children can attend costume parties and enter costume contests throughout the month. If you’re looking for the perfect outfit, we suggest trying Party City in Honolulu or Spirit Halloween at Waikele Outlets.

Celebrations culminate on Halloween Night, when Kalākaua Avenue turns into an unofficial sidewalk party, packed with costumed locals and visitors soaking up Waikīkī’s electric atmosphere.
