Following an 8.7-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s coast, a Tsunami Warning is in effect for Hawaiʻi on 29 July 2025, with waves expected shortly after 7pm tonight — powerful surges and dangerous currents may impact all coastlines, so avoid beaches and low-lying areas until further notice.

  • Know your zones: For most Tsunami Warnings, evacuate the red zone. During an Extreme Tsunami Warning, evacuate both the red and yellow zones. The green zone is considered safe — plan ahead and know your nearest safe location.
  • Proceed to a green zone by any form of transport available. If you are in Waikīkī on the east side without transport, you could walk up Kapahulu Avenue or Monsarrat Avenue towards the green zone. If you are in Waikīkī on the west side without transport, you could walk all the way up Kalākaua Avenue or McCully Street towards the green zone. These walks are within a 20- to 40-minute walk radius.

  • Vertical Evacuation: If you are near high-rise buildings, consider vertical evacuation. To vertically evacuate, proceed to the fourth floor or higher of a building that is 10 stories or taller.
  • Tsunami Assembly Areas are now open: You can find their locations on the map here https://p.veoci.com/hnlevac. These designated areas are for parking and waiting until the tsunami threat has passed. Please note that they are not fully staffed shelters. If tsunami waves cause significant impacts, official shelters for those affected may be opened once assessed.
  • If you’re outside the evacuation zone: Stay home and off the roads during a Tsunami Warning. Keeping roads clear helps evacuees reach safety and ensures emergency responders can do their jobs.
